RED ROCKS FESTIVAL and Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad in Olympic London

The first Red Rocks Festival concert took place on the Russia.Park site in Hyde Park on 28 July, the next day after the 30th Summer Olympic Games opening ceremony. The Festival and the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad came to London to support the Russian Olympic team.

The concert began with a set by DJ Marat Husseyn after which the Ukrainian band Vopli Vidopliassova appeared on stage. Oleg Skripka, who said at a press conference the day before that he had been preparing for the performance in London in some special way, spoke an amusing mix of Russian, English, and Ukrainian. After playing the hits “Chiosan,” “Buli denki” (“Days were once”), “Pachka tsigarok” (“A pack of cigarettes”), “Pisnya sichovykh streltsiv,” and “Vesna” (“Spring”), Oleg said, “Gudbaychiki!” (“Goodbyees!”) to Londoners, and the word was at once picked up by fans.

The Russian rock legend Garik Sukachyov was next on stage. He brought to London a program of all well-known and popular songs. “Babushka” (“Granny”), “Olga,” “Belye dorogi” (“White roads”), “Bella,” “Ya milogo uznayu po pokhodke” (“I’ll recognise my darling by his gait”), and “Angel” touched the very hearts of the spectators. A huge Russian flag was unfolded to the left of the stage – the music fans turned into Olympic fans.

Then Arsen Galstyan, the judoka who won the first Russian gold medal, was invited to the stage for honours. The sportsman was presented with a patchwork quilt with pictures of fans and the concert spectators presented him with thunderous applause.

Mumiy Troll, the legendary band from Vladivostok, became the headliner of the RED ROCKS FESTIVAL. London has long since become a second home for the musicians, for it is here that most of their albums were recorded. Ilya admitted at the press conference that he would be pleased to take part in the Olympic torch relay and added, “I am sure that Russia has something to match the big opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London which took place yesterday.” Mumiy Troll played songs from Vladivostok, their first album in English which was released in April this year, and reminded the audience of the “roaring 2000s” with the hits “Utekay” (“Run away”), “Delfiny” (“Dolphins”), “Vladivostok-2000,” and “Nevesta” (“Bride”). The track “Eto po lyubvi” (“This is out of love”), with a spectacular light show, concluded the concert.

The next Red Rocks Festival will take place in London on 11 August. A camera crew is working at both concerts, offering all those willing to have their sound recorded on camera for the Sochi 2014 Fans' Anthem. The Anthem is being created as part of the RED ROCKS global online project “Music of the Future” and gives everyone a chance to become part of the history of music and the Olympics. Sounds for the project can be sent at any time, not only at a concert: the Redrocks.ru website enables adding a sample to an online library. Using the collected samples, whether the noise of wind, the sound of an opening door, or the voice of a crowd of thousands, all those willing will be able, together with popular musicians, to take part in writing a nationwide Fans' Anthem that will be performed during the Olympic Games in Sochi.
